Title IX

Title IX

The Fight for Equal Rights

Men and Women have been fighting for years against each other trying to find equality for men and women’s rights. The battle has been going on for a long time and it seems that the Government is now putting out unfair and unequal laws to try to make women happy. Men should be worried about what is going because the opportunities for men once had are now leaving them because "the government" feels that men and women’s sports need to be equal. As good as this seems the sports and the opportunities that have been there for men are no longer there, instead of taking away the scholarships and the sporting opportunities away from male students so the females in the school feel they are being treated equal why not create more. Title IX has made this more difficult by each passing year. However the stories are always the same "Take away from the males and give to the females". How long will the government stand for women athletes abusing their rights just so they can receive the treatment that they want at the expense of the male athletes.

In 1992 at Sandpoint High School the males had bigger lockers for the oversized football equipment. The girls also had a locker room but the lockers where not the same size as the males. One of the female coaches wanted the bigger lockers so she filled a complaint and the school board agreed that the boy’s locker room will be changed into the girls locker room and the boys will get the girls. They did this so the space would be equal to both genders. However if the lockers rooms where equal than there would not have been any need to switch in the first place. The way that the coach was able to get the locker room that she wanted was easy complain that it is unfair and she got what she wanted.

Imagine that you are an athletes that is going to go to college to play a sport. You have packed and then you get a letter in the mail. The letter says that you have lost your scholarship because they did not give out the same amount to the female athletes. This has been accouring in many of the colleges in the United States. One college got rid of its mens cross country team and even the alumni tried to give donations to the school to try to program running again but it fell on deaf ears.

The reason that Title IX is a bad thing is easy. The females have abused the situation and are now using its power. I am all for the equality of men and women but the law needs to be changed. They need to find a way that men still get the chances that they deserve as well as the women. Instead of getting rid of the male sports, open up new ones for women. Let them get the same chances as the men.

In conclusion Title IX needs to be changed. The way it has affected many male athletes in college is astonishing. The law needs to be change to something that still brings equality to men and women without getting rid of sports altogether. Title IX states that "No person in the U.S. shall, on the basis of sex be excluded from participation in, or denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal aid." Let us take what the law says and make it true by making sure that the sports in our society are really equal.
